UNESCO Ramallah joined efforts with Radio Nisaa FM in Palestine for World Radio Day, on February 13, 2016.

This year’s global theme “Radio in Times of Emergencies and Disasters” focused on the role of radios in raising awareness and supporting access to information in times of emergencies and natural disasters. Radio Nisaa produced a live one-hour broadcast in cooperation with three other radio stations in Palestine; Radio Alam in Hebron, Najah FM in Nablus and Radio Alwan in Gaza.

“This theme could not have fitted more as we witnessed lately harsh weather conditions in which radio played a major role in raising listeners' awareness,” said Maysoun Odeh Gangat, Director of Radio Nisaa. “Radio remains a strong tool of communication and awareness for the Palestinian population and for us we stand committed to using this tool to the utmost for the listeners' benefit."

World Radio Day

The radio show featured a message from UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova, and the Palestinian Civil Defense discussed the crucial role of radio in times of war and emergencies, and even during the stormy weather three weeks ago. Radio Alwan also presented its experience during the war and conflict times in Gaza.

In line with the EU-funded Networks for Mediterranean Youth’s work in the region, the show also discussed the role of radio in supporting employment opportunities for Palestinian youth, by disseminating news on job vacancies, training and internship opportunities. Interviews were also held with Palestinian policy makers to discuss the mechanisms of youth employment.

In addition to the live broadcasting, interviews with young people on the streets of the West Bank and Gaza were collected, and two Vox Pops were produced on radio in times of emergencies and youth employment.

University radios participated in the day’s activities, including Radio Alam from Hebron University and Najah FM from Najah National University, to involve more young women and men in the discussion.
