GEMM Boosts Youth Employability Across the Mediterranean
Three years of intensive work have sure given their fruit. While the EU-funded GEMM initiative ends, its ensuing pilot projects in southern and eastern Mediterranean countries will continue.
GEMM stands for Governance for Employability in the Mediterranean. It is a regional project launched in 2013 with the aim of enhancing multi-level governance of vocational education and training (VET) systems and contributing to demand-driven VET and better employability of youth and women in a region that counts over one third of the population under 15 years of age.
The European Training Foundation designed the project with the aim to increase capability in technical and vocational education and training, multi-level governance and labor market connectivity. Pilot projects were set up in Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Palestine.
The results are tangible and pretty positive: the employability of young people and women in the region has been improved, more than 30% of participants were women, more than 100 local enterprises were involved and hundreds of vocational education graduates found work placements.
