Every year, UNESCO’s main celebration of World Press Freedom Day hosts a youth newsroom, which engages journalism students and young reporters from all corners of the world in covering plenaries, parallel sessions and side events.

The main commemoration of 2018 World Press Freedom Day took place in Accra, Ghana, on 1-3 May, under the theme “Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law”. Five NET-MED Youth members were part of the youth newsroom this time, which, under the name “The Talking Drum”, brought together over 40 young journalists. One of them was Nohaila, who noted, “This trip has been more than a professional experience for me. I have established friendships with many people from the four corners of the world”, a sentiment echoed by Amel, who cherished the new relations she built and the opportunity of acquiring what she described as “high-level experience”.

Young newsroom members conducted interviews with participants and provide background stories and editorials. Photographers, videographers, social media producers, and other journalists worked together, guided by a team of experienced journalists and editors, to provide a range of articles, photos, video and audio coverage of the global event and bring in fresh perspectives.

“I was a member of the social networking team”, explained Mahmoud, “I attended many sessions in order to get quotes from the speakers, publish them on Twitter, using the hashtags related to the event in order to make press freedom a trending topic. It was a stressful experience, but it was a great source of information and, most importantly, I got to know an outstanding selection of journalists and academics”.

It was a challenging yet very enriching experience, summarized Samah.
